MALAWI TRADITIONAL ATTIRE

Season 2 Episode 4

There’s no major differentiation in the traditional attires of the tribes in Malawi although there is a format for the country’s National Dress.

Men

The men of Malawi have no particular national dress as they wear mainly western clothings.

Men can be found wearing mostly western-styled clothing such as jean, pants, shirts, shorts and sometimes suits for occasions.

Women

The women of Malawi put on a traditionally wear which is called Chitenje (pronounced chi-ten-jay) which is similar to a large skirt which is worn with a blouse and sometimes a head tie.

A Lady putting on Chitenge

The Chitenje has been widely embraced by many African countries and is been sewn into different styles.
