MAJOR LANGUAGES IN MALAWI

Malawi is a country which has a great diversity which can be seen in general in its culture.

Of the many languages spoken, English is the official language of Malawi while Chichewa is the national language spoken by about 50% of Malawians.

CHICHEWA

The local language of the Chewa people is Chichewa which is the national language of Malawi. It is a Bantu language which is spoken as the major language by Malawians.

How are you? – Muli bwanji?

What’s your name? – Dzina lanu ndani?/Dzina lanu ndi yani?

My name is… – Dzina langa ndi…

Where are you from? – Mumachokera kuti?

Good morning – Mwauka bwanji

Good afternoon – Mwaswela bwanji?

Good evening – Mwachoma bwanji

Goodnight – Gonani bwino/Mugone bwino

Goodbye – Yendani Bwino 

Have a nice day – Mukhale ndi tsiku labwino

Yes – Ee/Eya/Inde

No – Iyayi/Ayi

Sorry – Pepani

Please – Chonde

Thank you – Zikomo

Other languages spoken by the Malawi people include Chinyanja Yao, Chilomwe, Chiyao, Chitumbuka, Tonga.
