The Republic of Chad, a Central African country is a diverse country consisting of over 180 ethnic groups with over 100 languages.
On today’s episode of Learn Africa, we’d be looking at the clothing of men and women of the Republic of Chad.
WOMEN
The clothing of women in the Republic of Chad can be divided into 2 categories based on the religious beliefs of the people, the Muslim women and the non-Muslim women.
The Muslim women put on robes that cover their bodies from head-to-toe. The hijab which is worn over the head is also part of their clothing.
The non-Muslim women who can be found at the southern part of the country wear PAGNE, a wrapper that is worn around the upper and lower halves with a short-sleeved shirt. A scarf is also worn on the body with different styles and body parts.
MEN
The men of the Republic of Chad dress according to their ethnic background by wearing traditional clothing such as long robes called JALABIYA with turban head-gears known as TAGIYA.

The Muslim men also wear a pant called BOUBOU together with the long robes while the non-Muslim men wear what is known as COMPLETS which is a tunic outfit.
Most men have started to embrace the Western clothing system of wearing jean trousers, shirts, suit and tie.
