Wearing traditional costume often shows a sense of loyalty and pride in one’s cultural values. And there are few places in the African region where this is more evident than in Rwanda. Today Rwandans, young and old, are fully embracing the country’s traditional dress code.
The woman wears what is known as mushanana while the men put on umushanana.

The mushanana and umushanana are important outfits as they are the national garment of the Rwandans and wearing traditional costume often shows a sense of loyalty and pride in one’s cultural values.
The umushanana was traditionally made from bark cloth and animal skin. It consists of a floor-length skirt with a sash draped over one shoulder, worn over a tank top. It is very important that, before you wear the umushanana, you get a Rwandan to show you not just how to wear it properly but also how to walk in it.
